Brit Rock and Hip-Hop.

Posted in Uncategorized by dylanhake on June 22, 2009

I decided that ones’ life should consist of a daily dose of  brit rock and hip-hop. Whoever disagrees with this statement is silly in the head, and should, under no circumstances, be taken seriously.

Here are what I believe to be the essentials.

Yeehaw!!!

Posted in Uncategorized by dylanhake on June 4, 2009

I am free! I took my final final today.  I have two weeks of freedom before I start summer school…. Now that I think about it… that isn’t too exciting. Lame.

More things to come,

Read this here.

An excerpt from Billy Collin’s “No Things”

The leafless branches against the sky
will not save anyone from the infinity of death,
nor will the sugar bowl or the sugar spoon on the table.

So why bother with the checkerboard lighthouse?
Why waste time on the sparrow,
or the wildflowers along the roadside

when we should all be alone in our rooms
throwing ourselves against the wall of life
and opposite the wall of death,

the door locked behind us
as we hurl ourselves at the question of meaning,
and the enigma of our origins?

What good is the firefly,
the droplet running along the green leaf,
or even the bar of soap spinning around the bathtub

when ultimately we are meant to be
banging away on the mystery
as hard as we can and to hell with the neighbors?

banging away on nothingness itself,
some with their foreheads,
others with the maul of sense, the raised jawbone of poetry.

After reading this, I decided to go crawl into a corner and reflect upon how small and unimportant I am…… I was listening to Radiohead while reading this, too. There was so much brilliance going on I decided to give up.

Get inspired kids,

For All You Artists Out There.

Posted in Uncategorized by dylanhake on May 24, 2009

For those artists who have grown weary of the church, for some churches have neglected the importance of the beauty that only art can reveal.  Remember that it is up to you to speak God’s love into the hearts of those who can not hear words of  love, for they have built up a fortress around their souls that only art can penetrate, and to tell of beauty that can not be conveyed by mere words.

Pope John Paul II. ” Letter to Artists from the Vatican.”

” In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the church needs art. Art must make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, of the invisible, of God. It must therefore translate into meaningful terms that which is in itself ineffable. Art has a unique capacity to take one or other facet of the message and translate it into colors, shapes and sounds which nourish the intuition of those who look or listen. It does so without emptying the message itself of its transcendent value and its aura of mystery. . . . In Christ, God has reconciled the world to himself. All believers are called to bear witness to this; but it is up to you, men and women who have given your lives to art, to declare with all the wealth of your ingenuity that in Christ the world is redeemed: the human person is redeemed, the human body is redeemed, and the whole creation which, according to Saint Paul, ‘awaits impatiently the revelation of the children of God’ is redeemed. . . . This is your task. Humanity in every age, and even today, looks to works of art to shed light upon its path and destiny. . . . Beauty is a key to the mystery and a call to transcendence. It is an invitation to savour life and to dream of the future. . . . Artists of the world, may your many different paths all lead to that infinite Ocean of beauty where wonder becomes awe, exhilaration, unspeakable joy.”

I would highly recommend you all read  ”Chasing Francis” by Ian Morgan Cron.

Two Things.

Posted in Uncategorized by dylanhake on May 22, 2009

First, I would like to say a big thank you to those who responded to my last blog. I appreciate it very much.  A second, and even bigger, thank you  for all the encouraging words. I am sorry I have not been able to respond to you all individually. Finals have kept me from doing so, but hopefully my blog will become more interactive in the near future.

Second, I just stumbled upon an amazing movie. “Henry Poole Is Here”. Go rent it or if you have that at&t video on demand deal it is on there.

And a third thing just in. Katy Perry’s new single stinks!

That is all,

Dylan.

Tell me your…

Those of you who have had the rare  pleasure of sitting down with me and having a chat know how much I talk about dreams.  Not the creepy dreams about runaway busses, clowns, watching yourself die in an unpleasant way, and all that other jazz that haunts you while you sleep.  What I am talking about is the dream an inherent longing to do something greater than yourself. Over the last few months I have encountered people who have, or claim to have, absolutly no dreams whatsoever. Kids that don’t want to do anything with their lives and are concerned with nothing but meaningless drama amongst their “friends”(These freakin kids are doing nothing but playing guitar hero!  But that issue is for another time).  What has happened in our society that no one has any dreams!? Everyone seems to be lost and/or the desire to do something beyond themselves is lacking or completely absent in their life. I have some halfway developed theories on why this is, but due to them be halfway developed I will not go into them. However, these current events have left me sad, confused, wondering, lonely…. Kinda like a bad breakup. Anyway, I want to know your dream(s). I want all 22 of you who read my blog to tell me what your dreams are. whether you want to be a rockstar, dancer,  astronaut, mother of 6, savior of Africa…. Whatever it is I must hear about it.

Dream, my friends. Dream!

Perhaps all things should be joy and mystery. Joy as God would have us know it, and mystery that only death, in that  extraordinary moment one is authentically living, can show us.

Hope only for such things as joy and mystery, And  act only in such moments of their presence.

Wormwood.

I just spent three hours in the RCC ( Riverside College of Champions) Writing lab. And what a blast it was!!  I spent those three hours reading “The Screwtape Letters”.  I am now a bit terrified, and I feel like I am being watched…. But I am remaining calm. Yes, a calm terrified paranoia.  I am sure most of you have read this book already, and you are probably wondering why I haven’t (due to it being an older  and a very popular book). Of course if you are not wondering such things, I am sorry for making the assumption that you care either way, and in which case, you should instead be wondering why you are reading this right now.  Go watch television, read a book, spend some time with the kids, anything really. Now, if you have not read this book, you should go buy it right now, and start reading it.  It points out some unsettling things that happen in our lives that we put no further thought into,  at least that is the effect it has had on me.

Bees wage war on Riverside Plaza!

Posted in Uncategorized by dylanhake on May 12, 2009

Some brilliant individual decided to string up a giant beehive in a tree at the Plaza. The thing is the size of a bucket, and it is strung up about 25ft in a tree. Now at first, my thoughts were, “What kind of stupid arse would do such a thing?”. But upon further reflection, I have come to appreciate this act of “domestic terrorism”( that is what some 30 year old biker/rocker/dudebro in the midst of his midlife crises called it. He probable doesn’t even have a bike either).  I mostly appreciate it because it caused such a response. Now I will acknowledge the fact that it is a dangerous thing to do.  People could get hurt!! At the same time , anyone who has the twisted exuberance to get a huge beehive 25ft up into a tree is someone I must applaud.  What better way is there to wage war upon the Riverside Plaza?…. Is it an unnecessary war? Perhaps. Is it a stupid and dangerous thing do to, and should the person(s) who did “this act of domestic terrorism” be held responsible and thrown in jail? Of course! Nevertheless, I tip my hat to the person(s) responsible. Their time and energy may be a bit misplaced. Well very misplaced, but they did bring some excitement to Riverside! Shoot! Dang! Frick!…. I do hope they get caught though….

Watch out for them bees,

…….I would like to point out that a security guard stopped by in his truck, got out, took a few pictures, and drove away. That was over an hour ago.
